The Accu-Chek® glucose monitor was applied for lactose determination in milk, whey and for lactose hydrolysis in skimmed milk. This equipment was effective for determination of reducing sugars including lactose and it was possible to establish calibration curves for lactose and galactose. Whey, whole and skimmed milks samples were analyzed and the results were satisfactory. The presence of fat in the samples reduced the efficiency of the sugar determination but it was not a limitation.
