Abstract

Short weapons were the general name of short handheld combating and fighting weapons in ancient China, and were called by people in comparison with a variety of longer combating and fighting weapons. In ancient China, there were no strict size standards for the classification of short and long weapons, and combating and fighting cold weapons, which were not as long as the eight of a man and also could be held with a single hand, were listed as short weapons. Yue, Cheng, broadsword, dagger, sword and golden hook were five typical representatives of ancient Chinese short weapons. In this paper, starting from the culture of the traditional Chinese martial arts, the application of short weapons in the traditional martial arts is studied in depth. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
