In the last 5–10 years, a trend has emerged where cities around the world are being compared to a greater extent for the quality of life they offer and how they perform and compete with other similar cities. There are numerous city rankings undertaken by various agencies to measure the success of cities on a global scale, such as The Global Liveability Index by The Economist (The Global Liveability Index. URL: http://www.eiu.com/topic/liveability, 2019) and the Global Quality of Living Survey by Mercer (Vienna tops Mercer’s 21st quality of living ranking. URL: https://www.mercer.com/newsroom/2019-quality-of-living-survey.html, 2019). By comparing cities around the world, we essentially value cities based on several assessment criteria only. How do we ensure we meet these criteria whilst maintaining local uniqueness and cultural differences and create cities with a point of difference?
