Based on oceanographic observations made from Japanese icebreakers on their cruises to and from Syowa Station over the last 22 years, temporal and spatial variations of the oceanic fronts in the Southern Ocean are analyzed. It is concluded that interannual variability is detectable even from observations taken only once a year.
