The sediments were recovered from the Sites 519 to 523. Clearly defined magnetostratigraphic records and relatively well preserved faunas occur in the lower Pliocene sediments of Hole 519, upper Eocene to Oligocene sediments of Hole 522, and middle Eocene sediments of Hole 523. The apparently complete Oligocene sequence in Hole 522 is especially important for establishing a direct calibration of calcareous plankton biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy in a midlatitude deep sea section.-from Author
