Abstract

This chapter presents a general analysis of Chile’s space activities. As with other countries of the region, Chile started its space activities at the beginning of the space race and it has recently adopted a national space program to be implemented in the coming years. A general country review and the history of Chile’s space activities are presented in the first sections. The next sections outline the national space policy and space program with a description of the main functions and responsibilities of Chile’s space actors. Next, there is a brief description of Chile’s legal framework on space matters and the space cooperation programs adopted by Chile and other regional and international partners. Then, there are two sections concerning Chile’s satellite capacities and the development of space technology in the country. The last section concerns Chile’s capacity building on space issues, giving a detailed description of current space education programs.
