The Role of Service Leadership in the University’s GE Curriculum: The HKBU Experience

Abstract

The concept of service leadership is not only new to Hong Kong but also to other parts of the world. Most universities in North America and elsewhere have adopted service learning as a strategy for engaging students in community service and extracurricular activities in support of their academic course offerings. The philosophy of service leadership is to develop leadership capabilities in students for providing service of any type with care and competence. This chapter will elaborate on how the ideals of service leadership education that include character, virtues, and values could be incorporated into the General Education courses. The process of course development and elements of strategy in implementing service leadership will also be discussed. Student reflections from service leadership courses at Hong Kong Baptist University will be presented to highlight the impact of these courses on student learning.
