This chapter reviews some of the broad patterns of referendum activity on EU matters, from the first referendum in 1972 to the most recent ones in 2016. This activity has been a distinctly national affair; European institutions lack the authority to hold Europe-wide referendums, although proposals for such a procedure have been floated periodically.
