Cell death is important in embryonic development, cell renewal and maintaining homeostasis. However, its malfunction is involved in the development of pathologies such as cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, tissue atrophy, and autoimmune diseases, among others. Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is the most studied type of cell death and its importance lies in the fact that it is a common process that helps the body to function properly. Other types of cell death, such as necrosis, pyroptosis or NETosis can occur in the presence of molecular patterns associated with pathogens or damage, which produce unwanted responses
