In April of 2007, the Estonian government removed a Soviet-era grave marker, “The Bronze Soldier of Tallinn,” from the center square of the city to a more remote location. This statue marked the struggle of the Soviet soldiers against Nazi invaders during World War II. A symbol of Russian pride, the statue has less significance to ethnic Estonians, as their country was engulfed by the Soviet Union following the expulsion of the Germans.
