Abstract

Stress injuries around the knee are common injuries, most frequently encountered in young, active patients, but also seen in older patients at risk of insufficiency fractures. Stress injuries occur along a spectrum, from periosteal edema/periostitis to the development of a stress fracture. The etiology is multifactorial. MRI is the imaging modality of choice in the investigation and grading of stress injuries and can be used to predict return to play in athletes. It is also the imaging method of choice in subchondral insufficiency fractures/SONK and can be used to guide management.
