With its great impact on plant biomass and physical and chemical soil properties, burning may be expected to influence water yield to a pronounced degree. This is demonstrated in the South African context by consideration of the rainfall-runoff process (the hydrological cycle, evapotranspiration, infiltration, subsurface flow and hydrological response), and via experimental manipulation. Management implications of manipulating water yield are outlined, bearing in mind the need to balance needs, costs and resource capabilities.-P.J.Jarvis
