The vocal repertoire of the pukeko, Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus Temminck (Aves: Rallidae), is described. Twenty-five call types, in 9 broad categories, are recognised and the structure, context, and apparent function of each are given. The calls are illustrated by sonagrams. Sexual dimorphism in, and intergradation of, calls are discussed with respect to the social organisation of the species, and are compared to those of other Rallidae. The complex vocal repertoire is considered to be well adapted to the highly social way of life of this species. © 1984 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
