Abstract

Pathogenesis and prevalence of hypertension are net uniform in diabetes, making it important to define strategies concerning screening and monitoring of hypertensive diabetics. Many studies have been done on the subject, and consequently exhaustive review is not possible. The aim of the present paper is to insist on the pathogenetic mechanisms inducing an increase in blood pressure in diabetes, to propose improvement in screening microalbuminuria by calculating the albumin/creatinine ratio, and lo emphasize the importance of 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Furthermore, recent data on angiotensin II receptor antagonists in diabetes are discussed.
