This review examines the relationship of group A streptococci to rheumatic fever and rheumatic carditis, the proposed role played by the immune system in the initiation and establishment of the cardiac lesions, and the experimental models to data that have been put forth to evaluate this problem. Some of the pathological mechanisms involved are also covered in brief.
