Figurational sociology and masculine embodiment in male physical education

Abstract

Over the last four decades, the synergy between males, sport and masculinity has received much academic scrutiny. A significant body of this research is centered on young males' masculine embodiment in and through Physical Education (PE). This chapter begins by discussing the dominant theories of masculine embodiment in the field thus far. It is from this foundation that the authors outline a figurational sociological framework. Figurational sociology is prominent in the field of sociology of sport and highly regarded among leading figures in body theory. Drawing on data from an ethnographic study of male PE, this chapter outlines a figurational perspective as an alternative means in which to examine this topic.
