Abstract

Aging populations and average life expectancy are increasing over the years (National Institute of Aging. Global health and aging. WHO, US National Institute of Aging, 2011). Diseases or disabilities due to aging have been becoming a worldwide issue, with additional strains on the society and public resources. In addition, others may not have the self-regulation or resources to manage their own well-being. As such, there is a need to promote healthy aging and sustain well-being by identifying the key individual characteristics and self-determined attributes.Based on the self-determination theory, only when basic psychological needs are satisfied, individuals will then thrive in the context of healthy aging. Nevertheless, there are challenges to promote healthy aging among older adults. This theoretical chapter aims to provide insights for promoting healthy aging and self-determined attributes for well-being in older adults.
