Functional independence and an improved quality of life in older adults could be achieved through a combination of aerobic and strength training plus flexibility and balance exercise programs. But to reach desired health effects, exercise prescription should be focused and precise. Vague or inappropriate exercise instructions could lead to a reduction of compliance and/or to a little or insufficient physiological effects. Effective exercise prescriptions should include precise recommendations about frequency, volume, intensity, type, time, and progression of exercises. This chapter provides a summary about the benefits of exercise in the aging population and some fundamental concepts about the variables to be taken into account when prescribing physical exercise in the geriatric patient. Thus health professionals play a pivotal role providing well-defined exercise prescription that could encourage more active lifestyle for their older patients.
