The article highlights the Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial (ASCOT). The trial aims to know the impact of using antihypertensive and lipid-lowering treatment in prevention of heart attack. The ASCOT-Blood Pressure-Lowering Arm (BPLA) of the trial discovered that amlodipine and perindopril were more effective in reducing major cardiovascular events. Rothwell and his colleagues hypothesized that blood pressure variability is an important predictor of future events.
