Understanding the incidence, prevalence, etiology, and risk factors associated with erectile dysfunction (ED) is valuable, as these have been established as contributors to mortality in men. As vascular disease in particular is an established contributor to ED, it becomes imperative for providers to be effective in the evaluation of sexual function complaints, as this can be a hallmark for increased cardiovascular risk and mortality. Effective treatment of ED has benefits across numerous psychosocial domains that include self-esteem and depression symptoms.
