Abstract

The Department of Statistics at Virginia Tech was founded in 1949. It evolved from the Statistical Laboratory of the Agricultural Experiment Station, graduating its first student in 1945. The department has a rich history in experimental design, industrial, and applications-oriented traditional statistics. Since 1945, the department has granted over 500 BS degrees, 700 Masters, and 300 PhD degrees. Our students have held positions in industrial and pharmaceutical companies as well as in academics and governmental agencies. An integral part of our educational approach involves collaborative training through the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistics Analysis, a unit of the department that provides consulting and collaboration services to the university.
