A simple formulation for modeling ignition of shielded energetic materials by external heating is presented. The problem was studied for shield materials of different thickness and various properties: inert, reactive, transparent, opaque, and double-layer. Anal. approaches and numerical solns. are presented for various conditions: ignition by a hot plate, by const. heat flux, influence of heat losses on the ignition time, interruptive heating, reacting shield, and the role of the interface thermal resistance.
