Abstract

The IEEE 802.15.5 standard provides an address assignment algorithm for low-rate wireless personal area (LR-WPAN) mesh networks, which can reduce the need of route discovery. In our study, however, we found that the algorithm contains some redundancy in control overhead and allocation time. In this paper, we propose an effective and rapid address assignment algorithm (ERAA) for LR-WPAN meshes, which compresses the address assignment frame and changes the condition of address allocation to reduce control overhead and to speed address assignment. Simulation results show that ERAA can reduce control overhead and shorten allocation time, as compared to the address assignment algorithm defined by the IEEE 802.15.5 Standard. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.
