Sraffa’s Standard Commodity: No Fulfillment of Ricardo’s Dream of an ‘Invariable Measure of Value’

Abstract

The construction of Sraffa's standard commodity is often motivated by the claim that it allows to isolate the price-movements of any other product (so that they may be observed as in a vacuum). This paper shows that a) a specific and complete solution to the problem of finding the conditions for such a standard is indeed available, yet that b) Sraffa's standard does not fulfill this list of conditions. The source of Sraffa's error is then isolated and the true set of "invariable measures" is determined and shown to be devoid of economic content. Die Konstruktion von Sraffas Standardware wird oft damit begriindet, daß sie es erlaube, die Preisbewegungen der anderen Waren isoliert darzustellen (als ob man diese in einem Vakuum beobachten würde). Dieser Artikel zeigt demgegenuber aber, daß a) eine vollständige Beschreibung der Bedingungen fiir einen solchen Standard zwar verfügbar ist, daß jedoch b) Sraffas Standard diese notwendigen und hinreichenden Bedingungen nicht vollständig erfüllt. Es wird die Quelle von Sraffas Irrtum herausgearbeitet und die Menge an wirklich "invarianten Wertmaßstäben" bestimmt, die jedoch ökonomisch gesehen bedeutungslos ist.
