The Asian and Pacific Conference of Correctional Administrators has been assisted by a small number of academic criminologists to become a significant influence in the region and beyond, promoting improvement in the theory and practice of correctional work to make it more effective, efficient, and humane. How the conference has developed over the past three and a half decades is discussed in detail, as are the changes in the structure and management of the organisation. It is suggested that the criminologists who have been directly involved with the conference have also benefitted from the co-operative experience.
