Product development has a long history with many influences from a multitude of disciplines. Up to the 19th century, products were engineered and produced by craftsmen or in manufactories. In the process of industrialization, engineering and production were separated which led the development of products to a new era. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
