Abstract

Cytological samples stand as an important alternative to tissue specimens for molecular assays, especially in impediment clinical scenarios. The most common molecular tests currently used in routine clinical practice applied to cytology, the array of cytological specimens that can be potentially used for molecular analysis, and the main issues related to biorepository for cytological materials for future tests are reviewed. Basic concepts on the alterations to be detected by different molecular techniques are also discussed.
