Abstract

The main technologies currently used in the fabrication of optical waveguides are reviewed. Recent key process and material advances which impact fiber performance and/or cost are reported. The processes reviewed include the principal vapor phase oxidation processes as well as the direct-melt approach. Selected recent technical advances which have been made that either capitalize on a process attribute or mark progress toward minimizing or eliminating a process weakness are considered.
