Abstract

Video monitoring for infrastructure surveillance and control is a special case of wireless sensor network applications in which large amounts of data are sensed and processed in real-time, and then communicated over a wireless network called a Wireless Video Sensor Network (WVSN). Effectively managing of such as networks is a major challenge. Considering that, a critical issue is the quality of the deployment from the sensing coverage viewpoint. Area coverage is still an essential issue in a WVSN. In this paper, we study the area coverage problem in WVSN with rotatable sensors, which can switch to the best direction to get high coverage. After the video sensors are randomly deployed, each sensor calculates its next new direction to switch in order to obtain a better coverage than previous one. In order to extend the network lifetime, our approach is to define a subset of the deployed nodes called a cover set to be active while the other nodes can sleep. Our proposed scheme is implemented and tested in OMNeT++ and shows significant enhancement in terms of average percentage of coverage. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.
