Abstract

The chapter discusses corporate governance issues for microfinance institutions (MFIs). The importance of the topic lies in the fact that many MFIs have experienced huge difficulties because of gaps in their corporate governance systems. Since MFIs can play an important role in a country’s economy, avoiding or overcoming these difficulties is not only important to them but also to the economies they are part of. The objectives of this chapter are to provide a well-structured basis for discussing governance issues at MFIs and to suggest guidelines for the establishment of corporate governance solutions in MFIs. The chapter is based on related case studies.
