Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the level of physical fitness based on health and academic achievement among Form Six Sports Science students in the State of Kedah. The study sample consisted of 51 students (23 male and 28 female). Samples were selected using a simple random sampling method. The design of the study using the “ex-post facto” method. This study was conducted using the FITNESSGRAM® test battery instrument introduced by Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research, 1992. Researchers determined the subject's physical fitness level using five selected test items to measure components of cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, muscle strength, flexibility and body mass index (BMI). For academic achievement, a test of basic knowledge of Sports Science content is used developed by researchers and has validity (r = .93). The results of this study using inference statistics analysis, Pearson Product Moment correlation test showed that there is a poor significant relationship (r = .079, p<0.05) between physical fitness levels and academic achievement for male students. Similarly, the results show that there is a statistically poor significant relationship (r = .096, p<0.05) between achievement of physical fitness and academic achievement among female students. Through this study, researchers are of the view that students' involvement in fitness activities to a minimum will contribute to their academic achievement. However, it relies heavily on the efforts of individuals to ensure that they achieve good results for both of these elements. In conclusion, good involvement in physical fitness can produce fitness and healthy among students and contribute to improving their learning process. Abstrak Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti hubungan antara tahap kecergasan fizikal berasaskan kesihatan dengan pencapaian akademik dalam kalangan pelajar Sains Sukan Tingkatan Enam di Negeri Kedah. Sampel kajian terdiri daripada 51 pelajar (23 pelajar lelaki dan 28 pelajar perempuan). Sampel dipilih menggunakan kaedah persampelan rawak mudah. Rekabentuk kajian menggunakan kaedah “ex-post facto”. Kajian ini dijalankan menggunakan instrumen bateri ujian FITNESSGRAM® yang diperkenalkan oleh (Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research, 1992). Penyelidik menentukan tahap kecergasan fizikal subjek menggunakan lima item ujian dipilih bagi mengukur komponen daya tahan kardiovaskular, daya tahan otot, kekuatan otot, fleksibiliti dan indeks jisim tubuh (BMI). Bagi pencapaian akademik, ujian pengetahuan asas konten Sains Sukan digunakan yang dibangunkan oleh penyelidik dan mempunyai nilai kesahan (r=.93). Dapatan kajian menggunakan analisis statistik inferensi iaitu ujian korelasi Pearson Product Moment menunjukkan terdapat hubungan yang lemah dari segi statsistik (r = .079, p<0.05) antara tahap kecergasan fizikal dan pencapaian akademik bagi pelajar lelaki. Begitu juga keputusan menunjukkan terdapat perhubungan yang lemah secara statistik (r = .096, p<0.05) antara pencapaian tahap kecergasan fizikal dengan pencapaian akademik dalam kalangan pelajar perempuan. Melalui kajian ini, penyelidik berpandangan bahawa penglibatan pelajar dalam aktiviti kecergasan sedikit sebanyak akan membantu dalam peningkatan akademik mereka. Namun begitu ia amat bergantung sepenuhnya kepada usaha seseorang individu bagi memastikan mereka memperoleh pencapaian yang baik bagi kedua-dua elemen ini. Kesimpulannya, melalui penglibatan yang baik dalam kecergasan fizikal mampu melahirkan pelajar Sains Sukan Tingkatan Enam yang cergas dan sihat serta dapat memberi sumbangan dalam meningkatkan proses pembelajaran mereka.
