Abstract

The research of rotifers in northern European countries is recorded and discussed, beginning with Carolus Linnaeus and finishing in recent times. The general development of rotifer research is reflected as well, ever since the first time, dominated by morphological taxonomy, and up till now, when also modern fields, like biochemistry, ecotoxicology and aquaculture, are included.
