Abstract

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) represents the fetal reaction to limitation of nutritient elements during gestation. Main objective of this Investigation was to determine the characteristics of newborns with IUGR and its relation to socioeconomic living conditions. This is a prospective, comparative and quantitative study. The study was performed in neonates born with IUGR. For each patient two healthy neonates were taken as control, born in equal conditions. The incidence of IUGR in 106 newborn babies was 1.81%. The most frequent type of IUGR was the asymmetric (71%) and the gestational age 35 weeks (19.8%). The predominant sex was female (53.8%) and 56.6% of affected neonates presented metabolic disorders; hypophosphatemia (19.49%) had greater incidence.
