Analyzes the social profile, networks, and activities of intellectuals in Rio de Janeiro in the early 20th century and discusses their relationship with Brazilian modernism and nationalism at a time of great socioeconomic change. The focus is on the self-styled modernist 'Festa' group, seen as heirs of Brazilian symbolism, and its journal of the same name, founded by Tasso da Silveira and Andrade Muricy and published in 1927-29 (subtitled 'Mensario de Arte e Pensamento)' and 1934-35 (subtitled 'Revista de Arte et Pensamento).' The group, which consisted of literary critics and authors, differed in many respects from modernist movements in Sao Paulo and other Brazilian cities and considered its symbolist roots a mark of modernity and Brazilianism. A quantitative survey of the journal's content illustrates its character and intellectual affinities.
