A simple model, based on the diffusion of metal and oxygen and on the reactions to atmosphere/oxygen and oxide/metal interfaces, makes it possible the foresee the kinetics of growth of the oxide film on the metal. The formation of scale on alloys is a much more complex phenomenon which does not lend itself (at this time) to modelling. The origin of internal stresses in oxide films is briefly discussed.
