The main hydrological axis of the Carpatho-Balkan-Dinaric region is the Danube River. The region consists of extensive drainage basins along the whole length of the river, except for the Upper Danube. The Danube enters the Carpathian (Pannonian) Basin at the Devín Gate, where its middle section begins, and leaves it at the Iron Gate gorge, where the Lower Danube starts. The river carries considerable quantities of solid particles (mostly quartz grains). The damming of the Danube and its tributaries have significantly changed sediment transport. Some peripheral areas of the region are drained by rivers flowing to the Baltic, Black (through the Dniester River), Aegean, and Adriatic Seas.
