Over 70,000 groin hernias are repaired each year in England and Wales. Tension-free mesh hernioplasty is a commonly performed procedure for repair of inguinal hernias. It is relatively easy to perform, with one of the lowest recurrence rates of the available repairs [1], and studies have shown that this is a safe procedure with very few complications [2]. But there are concerns about infection because of the introduction of a foreign material into the body. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
