Abstract

Based on established principles and practices, this chapter provides a vision for participation within the convergence research program. To begin, a rationale for broad-based participation beyond the scientific community is established and a succinct characterization of participation provided. Next, dimensions for determining who or what warrants participation, challenges for participation that emphasize process and method, and responsibilities of those conducting research with participants are discussed. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the possibility that participants might say “no” to aspects of convergence and a reflection on responsible innovation.
