Abstract

Notes that associated papers in the same volume demonstate that the forest and savanna elephants are different species, that some interbreeding goes on in the Congo-Rwanda-Uganda border region but it is not detectable in the Garamba area. The author reviews Pfeffer's awareness of the difference between the elephant in West Africa who noted both elephants in various places, but recorded no observations pointing to interbreeding. Suggests that the savannah elephant, Loxodonta africana, extends into the savannahs of West Africa where it coexists with Loxodonta cyclotis and occasionally interbreeds with them.
