In Chap. 11consideration was given to the dynamic analysis of the plane frame when subjected to forces acting on the plane of the structure. When the planar structural system is subjected to loads applied normally to its plane, the structure is referred to as a grid frame. This structure can also be treated as a special case of the three-dimensional frame to be presented in Chap. 13. The reason for considering the planar frame, whether loaded in its plane or normal to its plane, as a special case, is the immediate reduction of unknown nodal coordinates for an element of these special structures, hence a considerable reduction in the number of unknown displacements for the structural system.
