Abstract

Notes concern regarding the effect of land drainage and channel improvement schemes on river conservation and ecology. All stress the need to preserve or enhance habitats through the maintenance or construction of pools, riffles and meandering channels and the sympathetic management of bankside vegetation. To achieve these aims it is important that designs should be in harmony with natural channel processes. This paper reviews recent research on river mechanics and considers the application of these principles for river engineering practice.-from Author
