Abstract
Software technologies in general include broad categories such as operating systems, databases, communication protocols, software specification, design and testing techniques, programming languages, man/machine interfaces, software quality, documentation and so on. The application domains use a certain number of these subcategories, or establish requirements. This article introduces the relevant software technologies for telecommunication (Section 2). The de jure and de facto standardization international bodies dealing with these technologies are considered in Section 3 together with the most important current or forthcoming standards (Section 4). The article then discusses CSELT's role in the major groups, and concludes with an overview of the expected evolutionary trends (Section 5).
