Abstract

Hypertension in adults is defined when blood pressure values are measured 140/90 mmHg or beyond. Epidemiological investigations have shown that morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases are dependent on the height of systolic or diastolic blood pressure values. An antihypertensive therapy significantly reduces the cardiovascular risk and extends the expectation of life. In recent studies it was demonstrated that it could be of advantage when lowering elevated blood pressure values to 120/80 mmHg or even lower, especially in patients with essential hypertension and diabetes mellitus, additionally. Besides general measures a medical therapy of essential hypertension is often required. Drug therapy of essential hypertension should especially consider concomitant diseases, side effects or compatibility. In this context drug therapy can be performed according to the guidelines of the Deutsche Liga Zur Bekampfung des hohen Blutdrucks.
