Abstract

Adults of three species of lantemfish of the genus Symbolophorus occur along the west and south-east coasts of southern Africa: Symbolophorus boops from the Benguela system and S. barnardi and S. evermanni from the Agulhas Current. Information on the distribution and morphometric features of these three species is provided from ichthyoplankton collections taken from Namibian and South African waters. The distribution of a fourth species, S. kreffti, which appears to be associated with the intrusions of warm Angolan waters into the northern Benguela, is also described. © 1994 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
