In the rift valley of the Red Sea, presence of hot (up to 56 C) and saline waters has been ascertained at water depth of about 2000 m. No form of life in water or underlying sediments has been found. The sediments and overlying brines contain abnormally high contents of metal ions, especially iron, manganese, zinc, lead, copper, silver and gold. The in situ value of these deposits exceeds two billion dollars. Volume contains fifty papers devoted to different aspects of this hot brine problem.
