Abstract

The intensive activities in development of pico and nano satellites initiated the establishment of many ground stations in academia all over the world. Connection of such stations via internet in order to establish a worldwide network of ground stations promises interesting capabilities for the operations of educational satellites. This contribution addresses the topology of internet based ground station networks for the operations of pico satellites. Special emphasis was placed on protocol specific optimizations for integrating the satellite link into a global network. The problems in implementing such ground station networks are outlined and approaches to realizations are discussed. © 2008 by Universität Würzburg.
