This paper proposes self-organizing communication architecture for ZigBee. In our approach, we integrate application level communication facilities and network level management functions by putting all elements of gateways, ad hoc networking, network management, and plug-and-play services together. Namely, we use ad hoc networking facilities provided by ZigBee, and build ZigBee network management architecture (ZNMA) for autonomously and efficiently managing networks and ZigBee gateway by leveraging Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) as a key to interconnecting ZigBee with Internet. And then we combine all the elements together to enable the self-organizing communication architecture as a whole to provide autonomy, fault-tolerance, self-configuration, and self-organization capability. And we demonstrate our proposed architecture through implementation and evaluation. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
