The second part of Cell Membranes covers functional aspects of membranes. Here, the coverage, while broad, seems to leave out some interesting aspects. For instance, I would have liked to see some consideration of how cells repair wounds in their membranes (Togo 2012) or how proteins are positioned so as to give certain sections of membranes distinct functions, such as in the primary cilium found on many animal cells (Hu et al. 2010). These and many other possible examples are not covered, but what is presented gives a workable overview of the role of membranes in the context of many cell-biology settings.
