As the previous chapter has shown, there has never been a golden age of academic freedom within universities. In different historical periods, attacks upon academic freedom have come from the church, state, university managers and benefactors, or students and colleagues — or a combination of these forces. Confronting each new threat has posed its own particular set of challenges.
