Value-based care and associated value-based payment models are changing how healthcare is delivered and financed in the United States (US). This change has catalyzed the growth of entities such as Accountable Care Organizations and Clinically Integrated Networks and has ushered in population health initiatives across the healthcare landscape. These developments are offering new frameworks through which the US healthcare system can improve clinical quality, reduce the trajectory of healthcare spending, and address key social drivers of healthcare outcomes. This chapter addresses the core components of value-based care, value-based payment models, and the current and future state of healthcare supporting this foundational change in the US healthcare system.
